What Wynkie does

One app for your friends, your class, your team and your club. Here is what is in it, in plain words, and what is deliberately left out.

Sending a wynk

A wynk is a photo or a video you send to one or more people. You choose what happens to it: gone once the other person has looked, gone after 24 hours, or simply staying.

Whoever opens your wynk can watch it once more. If someone takes a screenshot, you get told. On Android the picture turns black when they try; on an iPhone that is not possible, and the app says so plainly: you will hear about it, but stopping it does not work.

One thing stays true, and it is written in the app: with a second device anyone can photograph your screen. No app can do anything about that.

Talking

Text, voice messages, photos, videos, gifs and stickers. You can reply to a message, react to one, or forward it.

  • A poll in a group, for when nobody can decide.
  • An appointment with a date and a place that everyone answers yes or no to.
  • Disappearing messages, if you switch that on for a conversation.
  • Search through your own conversations, on your own device.

Groups and channels

A group is a closed conversation: your class, your team, your circle of friends. There are admins, there is an invite link, and whoever leaves sees nothing of it any more.

A channel is something else: there you follow someone. Your club, your school, a creator you like. The admin posts, and whether people may comment is up to them. A channel can be public or findable only with a link.

Stories

A story stays for 24 hours and then disappears. You choose per story who may see it: all your buddies, a list you put together yourself, your followers, or everyone.

Those last two need a public profile, and that is possible from sixteen. Then anyone can follow you without having to be added. Useful when many people want to watch but you do not want to talk to everyone: following gives no conversation, and you can close off adding separately.

Clubs

A club is a sports club, a youth movement or an association. Inside a club there are teams, each with their own group, and a channel for announcements to everyone.

The club admin arranges teams, roles and invitations. What they cannot do is read along: they are in no conversation they are not part of themselves. A staff group is invisible to anyone outside it.

Games

Draw and guess, four in a row, and a few others. You take turns, inside a conversation, and the game sits as a card between the messages.

Nothing is kept. No points, no leaderboard, no streak you lose by not playing for a day. A game is something nice in between, not a reason to have to open the app every day.

Getting home safely

Walking home at night and not feeling easy about it? Start Home Safe. You pick which buddies watch along and where you are going. They see where you are until you are home.

If you do not arrive at the time you gave, the app first asks whether everything is fine. Only if you do not answer do your buddies get a warning, by email as well. Cancelling is always allowed and needs no explanation.

Attention

A screen that shows how much you use Wynkie, and on what. You can add a daily reminder.

What it does not do is lock you out. There is no timer that shuts the app, not even if your parent wanted one. An app that throws a child out is force, and force solves nothing. This screen belongs to you.

What is deliberately left out

  • No push notifications. You see what happened when you open the app yourself.
  • No endless feed. Discover stops, with the line "that was it for today".
  • No streaks, no scores, no leaderboards.
  • No counters ticking up to lure you back.

These are not things still to be built. They are choices, and they are the reason Wynkie exists.
